Take This Survey To Help Our Fisheries

Updated: Jan 13, 2021

The Department of Natural Resources is asking anglers to fill out their volunteer angler surveys. The surveys help the state quantify fishing’s popularity in Maryland as well as the number of fish being caught per species. The survey is important to fisheries management.

Fishing as a hobby has gained popularity in the United States and especially in Maryland. The global BASS Foundation published a report that fishing is up 20% across the country, likely due to an increased social media presence. Fishing has become its own category on YouTube, with channels like Jon B, LunkersTV, and the Googan Squad pioneering new fishing content. Each has over one million subscribers and posts daily. Bringing fishing content to the masses has resulted in a new youth movement in fishing, and while that is beneficial to fishing’s long-term future, it is worrying for the environment. More fishermen potentially means more pollution and environmental harm. That is why the survey is important.

There are surveys for multiple species: striped bass, smallmouth bass, shad, muskellunge, blue crab, and “assorted freshwater species.” The last one asks if you caught multiple species like crappie, catfish, trout, and sunfish. The survey also asks for expenses in order to calculate how much money is spent on fishing, but it takes less than 5 minutes to complete. And they choose a winner from those who fill it out to get a free Costa hat! So please take the time to fill out the survey. It helps all of us.
